Engineers Australia - Sydney Division
Mechanical Branch Technical Meeting
Thursday 6th February 2003
Designing Against Fracture in Polymers
Professor Gordon Williams
Professor of Mechanical Engineering
Imperial College, London
Professor Williams is the world's leading authority on the flow, deformation
and fracture behaviours of engineering polymers and composites. He is the
Engineers Australia Eminent Speaker for the Mechanical College in 2003.
Over the last thirty plus years Gordon has built up an impeccable
international reputation for his pioneering contributions to the
understanding of fracture, deformation and flow in polymers. His work has
established Imperial College as the leading centre for teaching and research
in polymer engineering.
Professor Williams studied at the University of London, graduating in 1961
with a Bachelor of Science with First Class Honours, awarded a Doctor of
Philosophy in 1963 and then a Doctor of Science in 1974. Professor Sir Hugh
Ford FRS recruited Gordon in 1962 as Assistant Lecturer in Mechanical
Engineering at Imperial College. Gordon rose rapidly through the ranks to
become the inaugural Professor of Polymer Engineering in 1975. His many
honours and awards include the Swinbourne Medal for 1986 from the Plastics
and Rubbers Institute, the W Johnson Gold Medal for 1999, election to the
Royal Academy of Engineering in 1982 and election to the Royal Society of
London in 1994.
