**** BRISBANE START FOR OCEAN EXPLORATION VOYAGE****

The world's most sophisticated ocean explorer, the Japanese research vessel
'Mirai', leaves Brisbane on Sunday in a voyage that will circle the globe to
improve understanding of future climate change.

The Blue Earth Global Expedition (Beagle 2003) is a commemorative $20
million circumnavigation marking the 30th anniversary of the Japan Marine
Science and Technology Center (JAMSTEC).

Australian researchers from CSIRO and the Antarctic Climate and Ecosystems
Cooperative Research Centre (ACE) will participate in the seven-month
nautical mile voyage. The Expedition begins in Brisbane, and crosses the
Pacific, Atlantic and Indian Oceans before finishing in Fremantle in
January, 2004.

"Whether it is future climate or simply understanding the factors driving
our marine environment, expeditions such as this are critical if we are to
make progress and better manage global ecosystems," says CSIRO marine
scientist, Dr Ian Poiner.

"These systems remain poorly understood and commitments to generating new
ocean observation initiatives by a partnership of international governments,
including Australia, are very welcome developments," says Dr Poiner, who
represents Australia on the international Census of Marine Life project.
