Australian Youth to Commercialise Space
Three hundred university students plan to examine Australias past
achievements and future opportunities in the international space
industry during the SpaceFutures conference to be held in Melbourne
later this year.
Aimed at university students the conference for will run from July 14th
to 17th and is currently accepting delegate applications. Convened
under the theme of Challenge, Exploration, Innovation and Funk', the
conference has been developed to expose a niche in the international
space industry for Australian science and technology.
Conference Public Relations Director Stephen Brammer said this
conference will focus on issues and opportunities facing Australians.
Salinity, drought and bushfire prevention, the future of reusable launch
vehicles and the medical impact of human spaceflight are all commercial
opportunities which can be explored by the Australian space industry.

find ones which we as Australians have the expertise to exploit he
Key outcomes (of the conference) relate to the project series that will
provide delegates with an opportunity to gain "hands-on" industry
experience on an ongoing basis. In the longer term,

SpaceFutures 2003 will focus on three streamed technical sessions and
workshops corresponding to:
* Aerospace structures - design of components and technologies
for use in the next generation of reusable launch vehicles
* Satellite Applications Technology monitoring Australias
environment and resources from space.
* Biotechnology & Medical Countermeasures Spin off technologies
for earth application and strategies for countering the effects of
disease and extreme environments
Confirmed speakers include Shubber Ali (Aerospace industry analyst),
Warwick Holmes (European Space Agency), The Hon. John Brumby (Minister
for Innovation, Industry and Regional Development) and John Douglas
(Apogee Imaging International).
SpaceFutures 2003 follows the SpaceFutures 2000 conference which
provided a milestone for the co-operation between industry, academia and
government in forging the Youth Space Charter for the future of the
Australian space industry.
