Please find below the above Press Release from our NSW Branch President, Joe
McKay.

WELCOMES PROPOSED MINISTRY OF SCIENCE AND MEDICAL RESEARCH BUT MORE ACTION
REQUIRED.

Joe McKay, NSW President of the Association of Professional Engineers,
Scientists and Managers, Australia (APESMA) welcomed the announcement of a
proposed Minister for Science and Medical Research by the ALP and called for
bipartisan support for the proposal.

"A ministerial portfolio whose primary focus is expansion and future
investment in science is a significant step forward in NSW and is at last a
recognition of the need for future investment in scientific innovation,"
said Joe McKay.

APESMA would like to see the proposed ministry expanded beyond medical
science to look at encouraging the full spectrum of scientific research and
innovation in NSW.

"A future NSW Government needs to focus also on nuts and bolts investment in
science and engineering. The NSW Public Service and Government agencies
have seen a decline in their technical skill base. This neglect has been a
bipartisan policy blindspot. It is increasingly reflected in government
policy formation and the operation of public services," said Joe McKay.

APESMA would like a commitment by all political parties to future investment
in NSW's public and private technical skill base.

Joe McKay said, "APESMA will be calling on the future NSW Government to do a
full review of the NSW Public Service and Government agencies' technical
skill base."
