International GIS Day

For immediate release, Wednesday 5 November 2003

Year 10 students from Caroline Chisholm High School will be assessing the
impact of geohazards at their school to celebrate International GIS Day.

The students will collect a range of spatial information about their school.
They will use this data in a GIS (geographic information system) to assess
their school for risk from geohazards such as earthquakes.

WHEN:	11.45am, Thursday 6 November
WHERE:	Caroline Chisholm High School, Hambidge Cres, Chisholm

*	Students will learn how to use spatial information systems by working
with staff from Geoscience Australia, ESRI & the Canberra Institute of
Technology 

*	Students will collect information from the school yard and then build
a 3D digital map of their school on computers in the school library

*	GIS Day is an international event aimed at increasing awareness of
spatial information systems and the application of these in daily life

*	People from Geoscience Australia, CIT, ESRI and Caroline Chisholm
High School will be available for interview at the event
