The Geological Society of Australia will hold its 2003 Public Lecture
Series this month around the nation, with leading earth scientists
revealing how we have misinterpreted – even mismanaged – the land.

With the theme ‘Making Australia: landscape, climate and tectonics’,
University of Melbourne earth scientists Professor Jim Bowler and
Professor Mike Sandiford will debate how climate change and tectonic
activity have conspired in making Australia’s landscape, and what this
reveals about the true nature of our land.

The presentations will dispel myths that the Australian landscape is a
sleepy giant but instead is a land of change which needs to be
accommodated in our management agendas.

The Public Lecture Series is an annual event by the GSA to take earth
science debate to teachers, students and the public and this year’s
presentations around the country over coming weeks highlight Earth
Science Week.
