"Science meets Parliament"
Media opportunities 13-14-15 October

'Science meets Parliament' is an event unique to Australia. It brings
scientists and Parliamentarians together for intensive discussions on the
national investment in science and research.

260 scientists and technologists will fly into Canberra for one-on-one
meetings with members of Federal Parliament on Wednesday October 15.

152 Parliamentarians have accepted an invitation to talk about science, with
water, soil salinity and frontier technologies topping a list of 17
discussion topics.

Before going in to the meetings, scientists will spend a day at the National
Press Club to prepare for the event (Tuesday 14 October).

Monday October 13, front steps of Questacon at 10 am
Launch of 'Science meets Parliament' flag by Science Minister Peter McGauran
 

Tuesday October 14 at the NPC, at 1pm
NPC address: a debate between Science Minister Peter McGauran and Shadow
spokesperson Senator Kim Carr
 

Wednesday October 15, APH Main Committee Room at 9.15 am
Jenny Macklin, Deputy-Leader of the Opposition, addresses the scientists.
 

Wednesday October 15, APH Room 1S6 at 9.45 am
Media conference: Greg Hunt MHR and Tanya Plibersek MHR
This morning, early career scientists met young Parliamentarians over
breakfast
Greg Hunt and Tanya Plibersek plus 2 young scientists will discuss outcomes.

Wednesday October 15, House of Reps Alcove, 11.15 am
Science Minister Peter McGauran addresses all scientists at morning tea, and
launches Academy of Science review of Earth Sciences in Australia.

Wednesday October 15, APH Room 1S6, 12 noon
Media conference with IBM Extreme Blue team leader John Wolpert, and Graham
McDonald from Merck Sharp and Dohm.  This is a preview of their speeches to
the Science-Industry dinner at Old Parliament House Wed night, 8.00 pm
