AUSTRALIAN SCIENCE COMMUNICATORS CELEBRATE 10 YEARS
More editors, journalists, scientists, engineers and teachers from across
Australia involved in communicating and promoting science will be able to
attend the 10th anniversary conference of the Australian Science
Communicators (ASC) thanks to a $10,000 grant from the Australian
Announcing the grant today Australian Government Science Minister Peter
McGauran said the money will subsidise member¹s costs for attending the
conference to be held in Coolangatta from 26-29th September.
³This grant will increase the number of science communicators attending this
years Conference who in previous years have been unable to attend due to
financial restraints, allowing the ASC to reach a broader audience,²
Minister McGauran said.
³ASC is a professional association that has been promoting science in
Australia for over a decade. With over 400 members it has become a
significant voice for Australian science.
³When the ASC began ten years ago it was the only group of its type in the
world. It has helped create and define the profession of science
communicator¹ to the extent that job advertisements are now appearing under
this heading in the press.
³One of the highlights of this years Conference will be the Unsung Hero of
Australian Science¹ Award. Past recipients have included Dr Carolyn
Mountford, who pioneered the use of magnetic resonance imaging in the early
detection of breast cancer and Dr Hugh Spencer a leader in tropical
³I have no doubt the Conference will be a resounding success, and I am sure
the ASC will continue to grow in its role of promoting the effective
communication of science to the public,² Mr McGauran concluded.
