Crop Doctor -- SEEDING RATED IN SPACE RACE
Growers should seed lupins at all row spacings at 100 kg/ha for greatest
yield and lowest risk of poor crop establishment.
Recently, the Grains Research and Development Corporation has supported
trials examining the potential use of wide (50 cm or more) rows for lupins,
with the trend leaning toward wider rows.
Martin Harries and Dr Bob French of the Department of Agriculture aimed to
determine the most effective seeding rates at these wide spacings.
The trials, conducted at Mullewa research station, included 25cm, 50cm and
100cm row spacings, sown at three seeding rates -- 50 kg/ha, 100 kg/ha and
Row spacing significantly affected yield, with the 25cm spacings yielding
the lowest and the 100cm plots the highest.
This result is consistent with trials in previous years that have shown
that, in warmer climates, row spacings can be increased without sacrificing
In general, spacings of 50cm have been found to yield reliably north of the
Great Eastern highway, where approximately 80 per cent of WAs lupins are
Seeding rates of 50 kg/ha or 100 kg/ha resulted in the highest yield of
about 1.1 t/ha, with no significant difference between the two.
Yield declined significantly at the 150 kg/ha rate across all three row
Seeding at 100 kg/ha will not only buffer against poor establishment if
conditions at seeding are less than ideal, but may also increase weed
Generally, with wide rows, growers should employ the methods used when
growing lupins in traditional 25cm rows.
