Science gets festive in Ultimo

Nerdy or not, if you have ever wondered about the why, how, who, what, when and where of almost anything, the inaugural Ultimo Science Festival is where you should be from August 16 to 20.

For the first time, as part of National Science Week celebrations, the Powerhouse Museum, University of Technology, Sydney, the ABC and the Sydney Institute of Technology TAFE will team up to make Ultimo a hub of scientific discovery and marvels.

Amazing science events will stretch for more than a kilometre along Harris Street with activities lasting five days and nights.

The four Ultimo partners have serious scientific credentials, including cutting-edge scientific research, technology, engineering, design innovation, education, communication, history and entertainment.

Festival spokesperson Dr Jesse Shore says the program will include among other things: scientific displays of scaled Leonardo Da Vinci models and inventions from ABC TV's New Inventors; an outdoor display of the Powerhouse's 3830 steam engine; science in art exhibitions; a theatre costume showcase; CSIRO'S Scinema film festival and ABC TV science films and documentaries; the Great Big Science Gig concert and hands-on activities for kids including model solar boat building, soldering and a forensic hunt for clues to a hypothetical murder.

In the evening, the institutions will become centres of laughter, science discovery and learning for adults with international guest speakers debating the big issues at Science on Tap and Café Scientific at UTS and the Powerhouse Museum.

The Ultimo Science Festival has been made possible with funding from the Australian Government Department of Education, Science and Training, the City of Sydney and the NSW Office for Science and Medical Research.

National Science Week runs from August 12 to 20. The Ultimo Science Festival begins August 16. Details at www.ultimosciencefestival.com or www.scienceweek.info.au
