IN THE MAGAZINE THIS WEEK:

RUSSIA'S OLYMPIC TREE FELLING

Is the frantic competition to host the 2014 Winter Olympics harming the
environment?

Russia's supreme court is due to rule this week on whether the
government can push ahead with plans to cut down thousands of hectares
of forest in Russia's Caucasus mountains to clear the way for the Winter
Olympics - even though it has not yet won the bid to host the games.
Greenpeace, who are backing a legal challenge to the plans, claim that
the proposed construction is illegal under Russian law because it would
be within a national park. Page 6

SPECIAL REPORT: THE GOD LAB

Advocates of intelligent design have a new strategy; an institute in
Washington has set out to try to prove evolution is wrong by putting
science first. Opponents of evolutionary biology, trained as research
scientists, are taking to the lab in search of the creator's handiwork.
If Intelligent Design supporters can cite more experimental research
then some may conclude that it is a legitimate topic for discussion in
American science classrooms, New Scientist reports. Page 8
