NATIVE KNOWHOW - Native vegetation is the secret which can help unlock the
mysteries of a farm.

"The farming system must mirror the native system in terms of water use,
which, if not properly used, means the system leaks water, nutrients and
carbon," US Plant Science Professor Dwayne Beck told the GRDC-supported 2006
WANTFA Conference.

His robust presentation to about 180 no-till farmers and industry
representatives included:

·        In nature, tillage is a catastrophic event.

·        Carbon, not nitrogen, is the element taken up in the largest
quantities by plants.

·        The lack of attention to carbon as a plant nutrient will be viewed
as a major shortcoming of the practice of agronomy in the 20th century.
