A TEST OF FAITH FOR WHEAT GROWERS <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns =
"urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

If Australia fails to improve the grain quality of wheat varieties, grower
returns could plummet $26 – 36 per tonne.

Efforts to meet this escalating demand for quality, coupled with the drive
to maintain a three per cent per annum productivity increase, have led to a
spate of new wheat varieties.

According to grain science researcher, Brian Osborne, growers need peace of
mind that new varieties have been thoroughly tested and will gain them
access to the highest paying end markets.

Dr Osborne works with BRI Australia, which researches grain quality and
processing on behalf of the Grains Research and Development Corporation
(GRDC) supported National Wheat Quality Testing Program (NWQTP).

Australia annually exports about 16 million tonnes of wheat and Dr Osborne
said its premium position in global markets results from assessing the
quality characteristics of new varieties before release.

The NWQTP has tested 54 of the 59 milling varieties, including all of the
AWB’s ‘Premium Choice Varieties’ released since 1998.

Importantly, the NWQTP has helped Australian wheat breeders crystallise
which qualities are most important, while helping identify which wheat
varieties most consistently hit the mark for markets.

According to Dr Osborne, BRI Australia’s National Association of Testing
Authorities-accredited data helped determine the best varieties for the
steamed bread market, which not only represents five per cent of Australia’s
$4.5 billion wheat exports, but looks to have a future of growth.

Apart from exports to South East Asia, Korea and Japan, Australian wheat is
also used to make steamed breads in China, whose 1.3 billion consumer
population grows by 12 million annually.
