WAs $2.67 billion (2005-06) grains industry recently received a boost with
two new varieties, which will value add the wheat-lupin rotation.
The wheat-lupin rotation was described by Minister for Agriculture and Food,
Kim Chance, as the cornerstone of many WA grain enterprises, when he
launched two Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) supported
varieties, Coromup, a new high protein lupin and Binnu, WAs new Udon noodle
He said that the two crops offer a valuable and complementary partnership in
the production system.
Both are bred and developed for specific markets. Coromup is aimed at the
aquaculture and human consumption markets, while Binnu is of a suitable
quality to satisfy the discerning Udon noodle markets in Japan and South
With WA supplying all of Australias Udon noodle wheat to Japan and South
Korea, the new varietys importance is obvious.
The GRDC supported National Variety Trials (NVT) describe Binnu as a mid
season noodle quality wheat derived from a cross involving Arrino.
Binnu has very good stripe rust resistance and is adapted for all noodle
growing regions of WA, however it is as susceptible as other varieties to
However, while Coromup and Binnu have been trialled and tested by the
Department of Agriculture and Food, growers can also consider on-farm
Once varieties are released and named, such on-farm trials can help make for
a successful farming business because there is probably no better applied
R&D than what growers do themselves.
Growers can value-add their on-farm trials before selecting varieties by
