NEW LUPIN JOINS THE FIGHT: A new lupin contestant joins the fight again
Black Pod Syndrome (BPS) to help southern lupin growers in WA boost their
under-performing lupins.

New variety WALAN2224 will be released on September 18 at the Esperance
Downs Research Station Field day and will be available for planting in 2008.

GRDC supported Department of Agriculture and Food WA researcher, Dr Peter
White said the new variety had good resistance to BPS and yielded higher
than Quilinock.

"Lupins in WA's southern agricultural regions have a reputation for yielding
less than half their potential four tonnes per hectare and BPS can
contribute to these low and variable yields," he said.

The new variety will hopefully improve yields in the Esperance region.

"WALAN2224 is likely to replace Quilinock and Mandelup in south coastal
areas prone to BPS," Dr White said.

GRDC SPRING TOUR TIME: This year's GRDC Spring Tour, from September 18-20,
will be an opportunity for south-east growers to have their say on matters
close to their hearts and pockets.

GRDC Western Panel Chairman, Neil Young, who will lead the tour to
Esperance, Munglinup, Ravensthorpe, Lake King, Cascade and Wittenoom Hills,
said it was a great opportunity for growers to discuss where and how their
GRDC dollars are being invested.

"The Panel will visit a range of National Variety Trials sites, plus join
SEPWA/DAFWA/PASE field days," he said.

"All GRDC Western Panel members and other representatives are confirmed for
the event, allowing us to meet researchers and growers at trials and discuss
the progress of current research and prospective outcomes, making for a more
efficient communication flow."
