LUPINS FOR HEALTH AND WEALTH 23.7.08
WA is Australia's largest producer of lupins, so it's fitting that The 12th
International Lupin Conference will be held at the Esplanade Hotel in
Fremantle, WA, September 15-18, 2008.
Themed around 'Lupins for Health and Wealth', topics will include new
opportunities for lupins in human nutrition and well-being and lupins as
livestock and aquaculture rations.
The conference will showcase innovation and help create links between lupin
researchers from around the world
Convenors are Dr Mark Sweetingham, Department of Agriculture and Food WA
(DAFWA) and Dr Jon Clements, Centre for Legumes in Mediterranean Agriculture
(CLIMA) at The University of Western Australia. The Grains Research and
Development and Corporation is a sponsor.
Dr Sweetingham says the conference will refresh thinking on how lupins can
underpin profitable and healthy agricultural systems.
He advises that a variety of specialised satellite workshops will include
molecular marker development and implementation in lupin breeding, disease
screening, aquaculture, feed grains and lupin root nodule bacteria.
A pre-conference satellite event is a 'Lupin Focus' field day at Mingenew
for growers and agronomists, hosted by the Mingenew Irwin Group and Pulse
Also on offer is a full day field tour to DAFWA's Wongan Hills research farm
to view lupin breeding and agronomy research activities.
Another field tour option is to the world's largest lupin grain handling and
dehulling facilities at Kwinana and Forrestfield.
Delegates can also visit a Fremantle niche bakery, using lupin flour and the
lupin seed chemistry and aquaculture facilities at Hillary's Boat Harbour.
Dr Sweetingham said registration was open until August 31 and keen local and
interstate lupin growers and other industry stakeholders are likely to
benefit from attending.
