A Food Secure World - Challenging Choices for our North


The recent severe weather experiences have brought into even sharper focus
the task ahead for scientists, researchers, farmers, policy-makers and
development specialists - how to ensure food security in the face of the
uncertainties and effects of climate change, as well as volatile food prices
and a range of natural resource constraints.

The Crawford Fund's Conference "A Food Secure World: Challenging Choices for
our North" in the Undumbi Room Parliamentary Annex, Parliament House,
Brisbane on 6 April 2011 includes international and Australian specialists
discussing issues around food security of particular relevance and
topicality to Queensland. A program is attached.


Issues will include:

.  to what extent food security will be a problem in the tropics within the
next 30 years;

.  future scenarios for food prices, and

.  the sustainable opportunities available for a renewed 'northern food


Speakers include:

.  Dr Kanayo Nwanze, President, International Fund for Agricultural
Development, one of the UN's specialised agencies (like FAO, UNESCO, ILO and
the World Bank);

.  Dr Willie Dar, Director General, the India-based International Crop
Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics;

.  David Crombie, former President of National Farmers Federation;

.  Professor Beth Woods, Member, Australian Rural R&D Council, and Chief
Scientific Officer, Qld Department of Employment, Economic Development and

.  Professor Rick Roush, President of the Australian Council of Deans of

.  Dr Simon Hearn, Principal Advisor, Australian Centre for International
Agricultural Research

.  Dr Peter Carberry, CSIRO's Sustainable Agricultural Flagship

.  Dr Jeffrey Sayer, Professor of Development Practice at JCU

.  Dr Michael D'Occhio, Professor of Food Security, UQ

.  Dr Julian Cribb, journalist and author

fisheries, livestock, environment and marketing issues.
