Greetings, Science Fans!
We're working on improving the notice of upcoming seminars, thanks for your patience. A special session has just been announced:
SoNS Seminar Series, Friday August 3 at 3.30pm in Building 19 room 19.143
Unconventional gas, hydraulic fracturing and Western Australia's regulatory response
Hon Alison Xamon MLC BA, LLB, Cert IV HS, Member for the East Metropolitan Region
Hydraulic fracturing for unconventional gas is a relatively new technique in the petroleum industry. It has rapidly become a source of contention, with communities and health professionals concerned about the potential for contamination of water sources. Some countries and states have responded to these concerns by banning this practice entirely. Some have imposed moratoriums. In Western Australia, we have substantial unconventional gas reserves and a fledgling industry. Hon Alison Xamon MLC, Greens (WA) Water spokesperson, will discuss the current status of unconventional gas exploration in Western Australia, the main concerns and analyse the Government's regulatory response.
Refreshments following. All welcome!
These are not "dumbed down" talks but real research presentations so content may be quite technical at times; nevertheless all interested members of the public are welcome to join us for the seminar plus drinks and nibbles afterwards, where you can chat with the researchers in person.
Places are strictly limited so RSVPs are essential. To reserve your place, receive parking and venue details or to request further information, e-mail n.bordas at ecu.edu.au<mailto:n.bordas at ecu.edu.au> or leave a message on (08) 6304 5116.
