Dear ASC Members,
Early tomorrow morning, asteroid 2012 DA14 will make a very close approach to Earth. How close? 27,600Km away. This may sound like a large distance, but on planetary scales, this is almost close enough to scratch the paint!
Asteroid DA14 is ~45metres across, weighs ~190,000 metric tonnes and is travelling at ~28,000km/h. If it were to hit the Earth (which it won't) it would produce a blast equivalent to a 3 Megaton nuclear weapon.
ECU School of Natural Science Astronomy lecturer, Rick Tonello, will be working in conjunction with the Gingin Observatory and NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) to image 2012 DA14 as it flies past at 03:24am WST.
The images will be live streamed to NASA TV, so people can watch a live view of DA14 flying past. If you miss it, because you're sensibly tucked up in bed, you can download the replay from NASA TV.
