Canberrans have a unique opportunity to see first-hand how earthquakes are detected at one of Geoscience Australia’s exclusive tours to celebrate National Science Week.
Geoscience Australia is hosting free behind-the-scenes tours of its building and collections between Monday 15 and Thursday 18 August.
The following tours are available:

  * Earthquake Alert Centre: Watch seismologists in action as they monitor earthquake activity across Australia and learn about the vital role they play in providing tsunami warnings.
  * National Gem, Mineral and Fossils Collection: Explore Geoscience Australia’s world class collection of gems, minerals and fossils, including rare specimens no longer available for collection.
  * Geoscience laboratories: Examine microfossils and learn how they are used to explore for petroleum and interpret ancient environments.
Tour numbers are limited so book in early to secure your place.
Geoscience Australia’s National Science Week celebrations will culminate with the flagship Open Day on Sunday 21 August, featuring a range of free hands-on activities, science displays and talks.
Geoscience Australia’s Chief Executive Officer, Dr Chris Pigram, said many people do not realise that the heart of Australia’s earthquake and tsunami monitoring system is located right here in Canberra – critical in emergency response situations.
“The tours and Open Day showcase and celebrate the role that geoscience plays in the everyday lives of Australians,” Dr Pigram said.
“Our world class scientists are excited to explain the vast array of work they do at Geoscience Australia and celebrate National Science Week with the Canberra community.”
Geoscience Australia is the nation’s trusted adviser on the geology and geography of Australia.
More information: Tour details, including information on how to register, as well as further information about Open Day 2016 is available at www.ga.gov.au/open-day<http://www.ga.gov.au/open-day>
